Notes for Jons Olofson Sodergren
Immigrated with his wife and youngest son Peter to North Jemtland Road near the Stockholm, ME border; Sent ticket to daughter Brita who arrived with her husband Alfred Swenson and settled lot 2, the first farm in Stockholm (her brother Peter had reserved the land for them;)10
1879 “Notes from Jons Sodergren 6/2 letter to Sweden: We left Trondhjem May 8, had a storm, and landed in Hull, England May 12. . . train to Liverpool. . . saw big elevators and people who rode on tramway wagons. . . to Ireland. . . no land for 7 days. . . 1674 emigrants on the ship: Swedes, Norwegians, Danes, germans, Italians, Englishmen, a few Frenchmen, and a Negro. May 24 landed in N. Y. . . . ship to Providence, train to Woodstock, hotel overnight (end of our travel money), to Caribou, finally met a Swede (Vinberg) to the Capitolium to Noak Larsson overnight, to New Jamtland. All poor people ought to be here, there is no lack of food. We are now going to start working on our farm (later the Frank Carlson place) clearing and burning so that we can sow a little.”45
